Waste separation initiative

Waste separation at DHL European Financial Services Maastricht: already a 30% decrease in waste production!

Facilities started checking the whole waste stream and implemented a waste separation drive in August 2009. Since that time waste can be divided up into separate bins: regular paper & cardboard; batteries; plastic bottles; plastic coffe cups; aluminium cans.

Results

As a result of this GOGREEN initiative, we already gained a decrease of 30% wastage. On top of this we already have 25% less transportation movements (reduction CO2 emission and fuel usage), 125 bins have been taken out of the building resulting in a saving of 31,000 plastic waste bags per year and our housekeeping company ISS collects 50% less waste!

Additional actions

Facilities also implemented a separate waste chain in our company restaurant for kitchen and garden waste and for glass recycling. Another major focus is the investigation of energy flow and the use of recycled paper.

Lighthouse example

Mercedes call center and University Maastricht are following our example: they are implementing the same GOGREEN actions and changes we have already done.
